USA TODAY Idol Chatter: Candid commentary on American Idol performances

Now, Ryan Seacrest turns his attention to the ladies.

Lauren Alaina says she's been waiting to sing on the American Idol stage since she was 6 years old. And the first chance she gets, the judges love her. They love Ashthon Jones, too. As well as a trio of strong ballads.

Taking a second look at the women, I think they might actually have been more consistent than the guys, as a group. Even Julie Zorrilla, Rachel Zevita and Ta-Tynisa Wilson don't sound horrible in retrospect, though they certainly didn't measure up to the best -- Pia Toscano, Thia Megia, Lauren Turner, etc. I wouldn't be at all surprised, though, if they get the edge in the wild-card picks (at least if there aren't any major surprises on the guys' side).

Ryan asks Ashthon Jones if they girls have become close friends like the guys. "Yes, all of us are," she replies. "We became best friends."

Naima says her favorite comment from the judges was Jennifer Lopez's saying she was like an exotic flower -- which, Naima says, is what her name means. Lauren Alaina loved being called "The One" by Steven Tyler: "I was pretty excited about it."

Thia Megia says she would be "devastated" if she goes home tonight. For Rachel Zevita, it'd be the "biggest kind of heartbreak," since she has finally overcome her insecurity. "You will see me," Naima says. "I promise you that."

Ryan calls forth Pia Toscano and Lauren Alaina, who both would seem to be sure things. So getting called up there together has to be freaking them out. "This means everything to me," Pia says, and then she praises Lauren, who looks like she's about to throw up. Ryan says that Kelly Clarkson posted a tweet about Lauren, comparing her to Kellie Pickler. "I'm just Lauren," she says.

And Lauren's the first girl in the Top 10. Could Pia really be going to the stools, instead of the finalists' couch?

Not a chance. She's one of the chosen 10, too.

But Ryan's not done. He calls for Ta-Tynisa Wilson and Julie Zorrilla.

Steven Tyler admires the honesty that Julie has shown, admitting that Breakaway was a mistake. He thinks she should take that honesty and put it into her next performance -- if she gets one.

Ta-Tynisa won't be getting one, unless she gets a wild-card spot.

Julie, also, is out for now.
