Monarchy enthusiast Matthew Rowe had already booked a flight to England for July when he heard Prince William and Kate Middleton might be touring Canada then.
“I just hope I don't miss it,” he said, laughing.
According to the U.K. Sun newspaper, Prince William and Middleton will tour Canada for three weeks in July. It would be the couple's first trip abroad after their wedding on April 29. Neither the Canadian nor the British governments have made official announcements regarding the trip, and calls to the Royal Family's press office weren't immediately returned.
“They are rumours and we don’t comment on rumours,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper's press secretary Sara MacIntyre on Monday.
The prime minister formally invited the royal couple to Canada when they announced their engagement last fall.
“It would be an honour to welcome Prince William and his bride to Canada in the future and show them the special warmth and cherished traditions that are reserved for members of the Royal family,” Harper said in a statement in November.
But Rowe, Ottawa spokesman for the Monarchist League of Canada, said there will be a lot of pressure on the couple to travel after their spring wedding, and Canada is the obvious choice.
“If the prince and his wife are to travel after the wedding is over, it's going to be Canada,” said Rowe. “Logically, the place for them to come is Canada.”
Rowe said Canadians would be delighted to play host to the royal couple.
“Beyond the fact that they are our future king and queen, which is huge ... they're global celebrities,” he said. “A visit by them would be of epic proportions. I think Canadians would be just delighted.”
Adding to the speculation, the league has e-mailed members to inform them of a trip from southern Ontario to Ottawa for Canada Day.
"The league has arranged for our GTA chairman Cian (Horrobin) to lead a bus trip from Toronto to Ottawa on Canada Day so that all can hail our future king and queen in their first 'official' Canadian homecoming as a couple," the e-mail sent out Monday afternoon says.
At a cost of $130 per person, the bus trip involves leaving Toronto at 3 a.m., arriving in Ottawa by 8 a.m. and celebrating Canada Day at noon with the royal couple.
The two-week trip by Prince William and Middleton will reportedly start on the East Coast and end in British Columbia.
Prince William last came to Canada in March 1998, just months after his mother, Princess Diana, died in a car crash.
